RE-VISITING "THE BLUE MIJ-it"

Next in line to be re-photographed and briefly documented is "The Blue MIJ-it," a Blue Sparkle Pearl kit made up of a variety of Japanese acquisitions.

This project began with the bass drum (detailed HERE) to which other projects were added (as shown HERE) to form a complete, playable kit.  Later, however, I added a floor tom to expand it a little, so the details are as follows:

  • 14 x 20" Drum Mate Bass Drum
  • 5 x 14" Magnum Snare Drum
  • 9 x 13" Stewart Tom
  • 14 x 14" Unbranded Floor Tom
  • 12 x 16" Ideal Parade Tom converted to Floor Tom

The most interesting member of this grouping is that 12 x 16" Parade Tom to which I added legs so it works as a Floor Tom.  These are actually attachable legs for a surdo* made by Pearl, but these handy little gadgets are very difficult to find, as they are no longer listed on Amazon and a search turned up no results on Ebay.**  The brackets attach to the tension rods and were originally green for some reason, but I re-painted them black so they don't really show.  A post detailing my discovery can be found HERE.  Pretty cool and super useful if you can find 'em.

*A surdo is a large Brazilian bass drum made of wood, steel or aluminum that is usually carried with a waist belt or shoulder strap.  So....yeah....it basically looks like a floor tom without legs, which is why they made these attachable legs for people who don't want to carry it around.  Surdos can range from 16 to 29 inches in diameter and 20 to 24 inches deep, so they can get rather heavy.

Of course, a quick Google search would have learned you all this so I don't know why I'm wasting my time explaining it.

**They are still pictured and described on Pearl's website, however, and are designated as Part Number PBS30BD as evidenced HERE.
