BLUE SPARKLE BASS DRUM

I have finally acquired a bass drum for my latest restoration project.  This 20-inch blue sparkle drum will be part of a set I plan to call "The MIJ-it Kit," because all of the components are "Made in Japan" drums that I have purchased, cleaned up and restored.  Details will follow, of course, but as of now I have my work cut out for me with this bass drum.  It is in need of a lot of repairs and replacement parts.  I am currently tracking down what I need and preparing to rebuild this drum to return it to its proper appearance and function.  For now I will simply post here some photos of what the drum looked like before I began work on it.

MISSING HOOPS, SPURS, T-RODS & CLAWS:

MISSING LUG:

WRAP DAMAGE:

DIRTY BADGE & RUSTY GROMMET:

OVERALL FILTHINESS:

As you can see, what I am starting off with here is basically just the shell.  I need hoops, claws, T-rods, spurs and so forth, all of which must be carefully selected and skillfully installed.  Then I'll need some drum heads.  So it's off to Ebay I go!

***AND NOW FOR THE FINAL RESULTS***

Here I will now post the results of my project.  This was a very labor-intensive job that required a lot of replacement parts and tricky handiwork.  I was flummoxed more than once, let me tell you, but I managed to secure all the necessary items and get them installed on the drum.

The first obstacle I had to overcome was the peeling wrap.  This type of repair work is quite simple and requires only some glue and clamps.  The wrap was not damaged, but only peeling loose in an inconspicuous area.

The more serious obstacle was the missing lug.  In the end, instead of trying to find a new one that would match the existing lugs I opted to replace all of them with superior quality Slingerland lugs.  This required adjusting the holes on the shell.  I DID NOT ADD holes to the drum, which is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN in the realm of percussion restoration, I just widened the existing holes ever-so-slightly to fit the vintage Slingerland parts.  I also tracked down some vintage Slingerland T-rods and claws to fit the lugs, and finished off the drum with some new hoops and heads.

To demonstrate my attention to detail, I even polished up the badge and grommet hole.
