REMOVING PAINT FROM JAM BLOCKS

As I clearly stated in a previous post, I once got the bright idea of spray painting all my Latin Percussion Jam Blocks black.  At the time it seemed like a good idea, but it soon became obvious that the plastic blocks were not going to stay uniformly black.  Whenever I hit them with a drumstick, the paint immediately began to chip off and reveal the brightly-colored plastic underneath.

Thus it became obvious I needed to remove the paint and return these blocks to their original colors.  Using a paint remover called "Goof Off," I managed to accomplish this without too much trouble.  In the photo above, you can see the spray beginning to "bubble up" the paint as it works itself underneath.  Using ordinary paper towels and a little soap and water afterwards, soon all three of these blocks, like the medium-sized red block featured in that earlier post, have been cleaned up and returned to their proper appearance.

Though traces of black paint linger in the little mounting holes and down inside the blocks, I am still pleased with the results.  The paint never affected the sound of the blocks, and the paint remover did not damage the surface of the plastic.

Another minor Percussion Restoration Project successfully executed.
