RE-VISITING THE BLACK DIAMOND PEARL
Here I go with another spotlight write-up, and this one has been long overdue considering this assemblage never received a mention when I originally pulled it together. This is the Black Diamond Pearl, made up of a few different MIJ "brands." The reason this set took so long to get its "day in the sun" was because the bass drum was formerly a Slingerland and I only had the 12" tom. Since then I have located an MIJ bass drum and a 13" tom, and it took a while to get those cleaned up and ready for display.
KIT SPECIFICATIONS (FOR THE MOST PART):
14 x 20" Black Jack Bass Drum
5 x 14" Unbranded Snare Drum
8 x 12" Majestic Tom
9 x 13" Majestic Tom
16 x 16" Star Floor Tom
This particular kit demonstrates a major flaw with Japanese-made drums: "wrap fade." These photographs do not suffer from any lighting tricks or lens flares. The BDP wrap on all the toms has indeed significantly faded compared to the bass drum. Under stage lights, who knows, but in plain daylight the contrast is painfully obvious.
So this is not exactly my favorite example of the awesomeness of Jap drums. It pretty much highlights one of the main things people point out when criticizing them and their inferior construction. I am also not sure if I like the addition of that 13" tom, considering it has to be weaseled in from the side on a tom stand. This kit might have looked better if I just left it off, but it's too late now. The pictures have been taken, the post has been written and the kit has been returned to storage.
ON TO THE NEXT ONE!
