REMEMBERING "THE FORTRESS"...

"THE FORTRESS" was the nickname I gave my rather massive drumset in the late '80s/early '90s. Back then I was a Neil Peart worshipper and modeled my set after his. Here is a photo of this set, a Tama Imperialstar 10-piece: 8, 10, 12, 13 and 14" toms, 16 and 18" floor toms, two 22" kicks and a 6-1/2x14" metal snare. To my left I had a trashy, disassembled, red sparkle snare drum (made by Stewart) that I used as a timbale, and behind me I kept a "spare snare" (blue sparkle 5-1/2x14" Stewart) just in case my primary snare head broke during a concert.

My cymbal setup consisted of no less than eight Zildjians and one authentic Chinese type. From left to right: 13" New Beat Hi-Hats, 16" Thin, 14" Paper Thin, 16" Medium Thin, 8" Splash, 18" Medium Thin on top of a 20" Ping Ride, and a 16" China Boy High over a 18" Wuhan China Cymbal.

In the percussion department I used the following: CP Silver Bar Chimes, LP Studio Bar Chimes, custom bar windchimes, hanging windchimes, LP 8" Ice Bell (beneath the bar windchimes), LP Chinese Bell Tree, LP Tone Blocks (later replaced with LP Bell Blocks, both of which have since been discontinued), Ludwig Triangles (hung under the blocks) and several cowbells (LP Agogo, Tapon, Black Beauty and Bongo, and Gon Bops Triple Agogo). The only items missing at this point were my Ludwig Orchestra Bells and a Zildjian crotale which I added shortly thereafter.
