INTERESTING FINDS ON EBAY

OH...MY...GOSH!  Is it time to go back to work yet?  I am getting very close to becoming bored.

Today I wasted a couple of hours looking around on Ebay, and though I was unable to find anything worth buying I did stumble across a couple of interesting items.  This first one gave me a good laugh.  Why is that?  Just take a close look at this photo.  Don't notice anything unusual?

Okay, I'll explain it so we can all laugh.  Look at the top rim of this drum.  See that opening between the tension rods, right above the badge?  What is that?

That is what I call hilarious improvisation.  Apparently the owner of this drum, which is an 8-lug snare, only had a 6-lug rim lying around, so instead of tracking down the correct replacement he just bent the rim he had and drilled new holes to make it work anyway.  Here in the second photo you can see two of the original holes that didn't line up, so he just ignored them and kept drilling.

This seems like it would take a whole heck of a lot of time and effort but I guess some people just aren't willing to hunt down proper replacement parts.  This one should do fine!

Then I came across this unusual item and YES, it is supposed to look like this.  This is the infamous "Flat Tire" Kick Drum of a vintage Trixon kit.  This was a marketing gimmick by this drum company that wondered, "Why do bass drums have to be perfectly round?"

The answer, of course, is "Because drum heads are round, ya numbskull!"

That has always been my concern when I see these percussion oddities.  What would you do if the kick head busted?  How would you ever find another one?  So.....just out of curiosity I did a little searching and discovered that "Holy Cow!  Remo does make heads for these drums!"

Sure enough, if you go HERE you can find one.....and it's only $275 dollars!  Coo-well!  So after I spend $2,400.00 for the kit and $160.00 for the shipping, I can pick up a couple of new heads to fix it up.  Sounds like a deal to me.*

Better yet, I could really splurge and get this deluxe model that has a built-in bongo set for $5,200.00 and only $125.00 for shipping!  Woo-hoo!

Oh, heck, I can't decide.  Maybe I'll just sit on one of the bass drums I already have and get the same effect.  To be honest, I'm not real keen on the whole idea.  Yeah, I know the unique shape allows for different tones based on where the kick pedal is placed, but it still looks...not right...to me.  It still feels like just a gimmick that allows sellers to demand outlandish, unreasonable prices for these kits, simply because they look different.  Or in my opinion, weird.  Other than that, the drums don't have that much going for them.  In fact, the snare drum arm that mounts off of the bass drum reportedly broke rather easily and was considered a major design flaw.

WHICH IS WHY WE HAVE REMOVED THE ARM MOUNT AND PROVIDED A FLAT BASE SNARE STAND ON OUR NEW RE-ISSUE OF THIS CLASSIC VINTAGE SUPER-RARE COLLECTIBLE LIMITED-TIME-ONLY 2020 VOX TELSTAR DRUM SET FEATURING THE ICONIC (NON-CHAMBERED) "FLAT TIRE" BASS DRUM!

Now on a more serious note, I would like to pass along one simple piece of information to everyone in the world out there who is looking to sell drums.  Whether it be on Ebay, Reverb, Craigslist, Facebook or WHATEVER!  Please...please...please...remember this tip: When I am searching for interesting drums to purchase and I come across your ad or your auction for the one you are offering I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THIS >>>>>>

This is absolutely NO $#@!?& HELP!  I know this drum is used.  I know the heads have been beaten and the wires are worn and all of it will probably have to be replaced, but this tells me nothing about THE DRUM.  I don't know how many ads I come across that say VINTAGE SNARE DRUM and the first photo is this >>>

Okay, thank you.  Thank you so much.  Now I am reassured that this drum is actually round.  I was afraid it might be square....or trapezoidal.....

But what brand is it?  What color is it?  What material is it?  What size is it?

NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE HEADS!  SHOW ME THE DRUM!!

I am sorry.  This is a minor pet peeve of mine.  What I should have said was, When placing an ad for a drum, do not waste time or film on the top of the drum head.  Heads are disposable, easily and often replaced, and chosen based on a particular drummer's taste and style, so this is of little concern when inquiring about the appearance and condition of a drum.  What I want to see is the shell, the wrap and the hardware.  Thank you.

*Something interesting I later realized was this custom Remo head is only for the FRONT resonant side of the bass drum.  This oddly-shaped head would not work on the KICK side as well because the design would have to be mirrored.  Upon reading the fine print my thoughts were confirmed.  The resonant and batter heads are not interchangeable and you must be careful to specify when ordering.  So this seems like a confusing inconvenience, and another reason why DRUM HEADS SHOULD BE ROUND.
