SALVAGING THE "BLACK STRATA MIJ-it"
Here is another restoration project that I completed recently. This "Black Strata" Japanese kit was in bad shape. Only the 20-inch bass drum and a 12-inch tom remained. What became of the other drums is unknown.
Since the 12-inch tom was pretty much intact and would only need to be cleaned and re-headed, I decided to start with the bass drum, which required many replacement parts. The one wooden hoop that I had was too badly deteriorated to re-use, so right away I needed two new hoops. I would also have to find all new claws and rods, as well as new spurs.
Upon closer examination, I discovered that although the sixteen lugs were not too badly pitted and could be salvaged, the inner swivel nuts would have to be changed out. Old Japanese lugs sometimes employ odd-sized swivel nuts with threadings that are difficult to match up with proper tension rods. Therefore while cleaning all the lugs, I removed the old swivel nuts and replaced them with new ones that would accommodate standard-thread tension rods. This can be tricky because the springs that hold the swivel nuts in place have to be taken out and put back in, but I've performed this operation many times before so it was not a problem.
With all my parts found, ordered, received and cleaned, I was then ready to reassemble this bass drum. Here are the final results:
Mission accomplished. This kick drum now looks awesome and ready to play. Time to clean up that 12-inch.....and keep my eyes open for other drums with this style wrap that I could acquire and add to this kit.
