CUSTOM WIND CHIMES FOR DRUM SET

A couple of interesting additions to the Percussion Fortress are these custom sets of wind chimes that I make myself.  These are normal-looking wind chime sets that I have purchased, dismantled and re-mounted on a straight "bar chimes" frame in order to make them more compatible with a drum set arrangement.

Here is a basic set of moderately-priced wind chimes that would typically be hung on a back porch or some other residential setting.  That is if you're normal.  As a percussionist I purchase two sets and immediately set about destroying them.

The wooden parts are discarded and the aluminum tubes are aligned in an attractive ascending/descending order on a new frame so that they can be manipulated with the hand or a mallet.  There's not much wind circulating around my drum set.

Here is another set of wind chimes I came across on eBay and purchased.  When they arrived I was extremely pleased to discover that they were not the typical lightweight hollow tubes but instead six solid 1/2"  rods, exactly like a huge set of brass bar chimes.  However, these rods were made of gold-anodized aluminum alloy, whatever that means.  Anyway, after I hurriedly ordered a second set to add to the first, I contacted the seller to find out if I could custom order several more rods in varying lengths to make a giant set of bar chimes.  Unfortunately the seller wrote back to tell me he has retired from the wind chimes business and is selling off the last of his inventory, so no further rods could be cut.  Though this was a bit disappointing, the twelve rods I had already purchased made a lovely set of chimes in descending/ascending order.

Custom bar chimes can be made from any wind chime tubes, rods or other items that make a pleasant sound.  I experiment with all kinds of noise-makers, including metal tubes, keys, bells and etc.  If it sounds unique and looks pretty cool, I will add it to the Percussion Fortress.
