Upon the completion of my restoration efforts on my blue-sparkle Stewart snare, I decided to make this video to examine the sound of it compared to my Tama model. The results were not all that shocking; the Stewart, although a "cheap, import piece of crud," holds up pretty well compared to its modern counterpart. Both drums are wooden-shelled, 5-1/2x14" with coated heads.
The Stewart has a slightly deeper tone than the Tama, and a little more ring. This is because there is a little muffling on the latter, while the Stewart is wide open. The Tama definitely has better snare response, while the wires on the Stewart don't seem to cut through as well. That's not a huge problem, but I was hoping that by tightening the bottom head I could get more snare sound out of it.
Despite these subtle differences, both drums sound great to me. I enjoy playing either one. Of course, my digital camera doesn't exactly have the most awesome audio recording abilities, but this video provides me with a general idea of how these snares compare side-by-side.
