CYMBAL SET-UP

One of the major changes I have implemented while constructing the Mini-Fortress is a switch in the cymbal department from Zildjian to Sabian. This decision was made rather abruptly when I found my local music store stocked more Sabians than Zildjians. I had fully intended to buy a pair of Zildjian 13" New Beat Hi-Hats to replicate the ones used on The Fortress, but came across these Sabian 13" Hand Hammered cymbals instead.

Being a bit impatient, I decided to give the Sabians a try rather than wait for my dealer to order what I originally had in mind. Special ordering would cost more and take too long, so I took a chance. The result was extremely positive, and I found I enjoyed the sound of the Sabians very much. The "HH" series is similar to the Zildjian "K" Series, which I have always admired but never actually played. They are considered "jazz" cymbals and feature "warm, dark tones" slightly different from traditional-sounding cymbals.

In my current setup I am also playing the following: a 16" Sabian AAX Crash, a 10" Play-On Splash, a 15" Sabian HH Medium Thin Crash over a 20" Tama Ride, a 12" Wuhan China and a 16" Tama Crash.

The original kit came equipped with cheap Tama cymbals, which remind me rather unpleasantly of the old Camber cymbals: very "tinny" and metallic-sounding, more like mass-produced discs than musical instruments. My Splash is a low-quality Play-On cymbal I bought on a whim some years ago just because it was so inexpensive.

In the future I would like to replace my junk cymbals with Sabian HHs: a 20" Ride*, a 16 or 17" Crash, and an 8" Splash. I would also consider looking at some Sabian China-types in the future.

*Note: I would prefer an 18" Ride to conserve space, but they do not make one in the "HH" Series.
